Immanent Isolation: The problem of Masculinity in Of Mice and Men
In Of Mice and Men Steinbeck presents a picture of american masculinity in the southern lower class during the depression. Men dominate the narrative, so much so that Steinbeck gives the only woman to appear in the story no other name than “Curley’s wife”. Furthermore, all these men perform their masculinity by proving their independence. However, Steinbeck shows that underneath this masculine performance these men desire communion with other men. However, they refuse to acknowledge that desire because to admit their need for another man destroys their independence––the most fundamental aspect of their masculinity. Because of this inherent contradiction in their masculine performance, Steinbeck’s male characters condemn themselves to solitude. One gains a better understanding of this problem of solitude by examining how Of Mice and Men portrays the american conception of masculinity.

Character Space in Great Expectation
Pip’s progression from childhood to adulthood defines Great Expectations as a bildungsroman. In the narrative, Pip’s social mobility characterizes his path toward adulthood, both of which are only possible because the narrative forces the other characters into minor roles, while building up Pip as the novel’s protagonist. As Woloch explains in The One vs. the Many, the protagonist emerges from the narrative through taking up the majority of space within the novel’s character system. In other words, each character holds “a determined space and position within the narrative as a whole,” and the arrangement and interaction of the multiple and differentiated characters create a unified narrative structure (Woloch 14). Thus, Pip’s coming-of-age story, in which he as a character becomes more complex, necessitates the flattening of the other characters.
